Much has been said and written about the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill since its introduction to Parliament on 8 August, as it is essentially the first piece of enabling legislation to outline the government’s plans for the implementation of universal health coverage.

Until such time as the finer details of the NHI have been determined it would be somewhat premature to comment on the impact thereof. However, for South Africa to achieve universal health coverage, which is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, methods of achieving greater efficiency from the country’s healthcare resources must be found. After all, providing universal access to healthcare would be meaningless if the quality of the care is not safeguarded.

In our opinion that is where healthcare professionals and companies such as ProfNet can make a meaningful contribution. More about this and other NHI developments will soon follow.
